Arrest Made in Death of Lewiston, Maine, Four-Year-Old
According to the Maine State Police, at approximately 4:55 a.m. on May 17, 2025, a 911 call came into the Lewiston Police Department for a four-year-old with a gunshot wound to the head at 93 Pierce Street, apartment number two.
Responding to the 911 call were the Lewiston Police, Lewiston Fire Department, and United Ambulance Service. United Ambulance Service transported the child identified as Jasper Smith to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. The child was pronounced deceased at 7:08 a.m. The child was transported to the Maine medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
Per protocol, when there is a death of a child in a household, the Department of Health and Human Services is notified.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South, Lewiston Police Department, and Department of Health and Human Services investigated this case, and this investigation remains ongoing.
At approximately 10:25 a.m. today, June 18, 2025, police arrested Robert McCoy, 35, the child’s stepfather. McCoy was charged with manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child. The child’s mother, Mikayla Smith, 27, was also arrested on unrelated warrants. Both McCoy and Smith were transported to the Androscoggin County Jail.
