People woke up to the awful news that 2025 had started with a mass casualty on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
Around 3:15 a.m. on January 1, 2025, a white Ford pickup had driven at a high rate of speed down Bourbon Street into a crowd of people out celebrating the new year. After the suspect plowed into the crowd, he then started shooting at New Orleans police. Two officers were injured in the shooting and are in stable condition, according to New Orleans police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick during a press conference.
"He was hellbent on creating the carnage," said Kirkpatrick during the press conference. Kirkpatrick said a man drove a pickup truck at "a very fast pace" past police barricades on Bourbon Street, crashing his vehicle and firing at New Orleans police. She said 300 police officers were on duty in the area. "It was very intentional behavior. This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could. It was not a DUI situation," Kirkpatrick said.
FBI Special Agent Aletha Duncan said that an improvised explosive device was also found.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a press release, “The country woke up this morning to news of a terrible tragedy in New Orleans that killed at least 10 people and injured many more.
My heart is broken for those who began their year by learning people they love were killed in this horrific attack, and my prayers are with the dozens who were injured, including the New Orleans Police Department officers who risked their lives to save others.
The FBI is investigating this matter as an act of terrorism. The FBI, the ATF, the Justice Department’s National Security Division, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana will continue to work with our law enforcement partners and will deploy every available resource to conduct this investigation.”
The FBI has just identified the suspect as Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, from Texas. The FBI says the suspect is an American citizen and was born in the U.S.
Anyone with information that can assist in this ongoing investigation is urged to call the New Orleans FBI at 504-816-3000 or send an email to tips@fbi.gov.
