At 9:11 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025, the Maine State Police Troop G received a report that there was a two-vehicle crash near mile marker 3 on I-95 southbound on the Piscataqua River Bridge.
At 9:17 a.m., a second call came in with a passing driver reporting to the Maine State Police that a male individual appeared to be trying to jump from the bridge.
Maine State Police Troop G, the Kittery Police Department, the Portsmouth Police Department, and additional Maine State Police Troop G units all responded to the scene.
Kittery police officers were able to make contact with the man and were able to take him into custody for a mental health evaluation safely.
According to the Maine Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Shannon Moss, the Maine State Police preliminary investigation indicates the man was experiencing a mental health crisis and had been driving to jump off the bridge when he was involved in the earlier crash.
Traffic on the bridge was impacted for approximately 30 minutes while officers negotiated with the man, and the vehicles were removed. Both vehicles involved in the earlier crash sustained minor damage, and no injuries were reported.
