Suspect in Maine Mall Shooting Has Been Arrested
The suspect in the shooting at the Maine Mall on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, has been arrested.
South Portland Police said that they received information that Ahmed Basheer Awad, 20, wanted to turn himself in to the police. South Portland Police detectives worked through a third party to arrange that, and at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2025, South Portland Police detectives met with Awad and took him into custody without incident.
Awad was taken to the Cumberland County Jail, where he was charged with the following:
· Elevated aggravated assault class A felony;
· Reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, class C felony;
· Carrying a concealed/threatening display of a weapon (person under 21 years of age); class D misdemeanor.
South Portland Police said the gun involved in the shooting has not been recovered. Awad is currently being held on $100,000 cash bail pending arraignment. He will be arraigned tomorrow, Friday, February 7, 2025, at 1 p.m.
One person was shot inside the mall on Wednesday and was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment and is expected to survive.
