The USGS recorded a 3.8 earthquake in the ocean 11 kilometers southeast of York Harbor, Maine on Monday, January 27, 2025, at 10:22 a.m.
Social media has people in Maine commenting on the Portland Old Port page. Several say that they felt it in Westbrook, Falmouth, and North Berwick, and a few mention that they thought it was either a truck or something wrong with their furnace.
New England does occasionally experience earthquakes, but it still surprises some residents when one occurs. According to the Maine Geological Survey, the largest earthquake felt in Maine was in 1904 with a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that caused minor damage to buildings and some chimneys. That earthquake occurred between Bar Harbor and Passamaquoddy Bay, and it was felt across the New England area and the southeastern part of Canada.
The USGS Felt Report map shows all the reports that came in from people who felt the earthquake. The earthquake was reported to have been felt as far as Augusta according to the map.
